Zenji Digital Television was started out of public demand requesting Zanzibar Media Corporation Ltd (ZMCL) which also owns and runs the most listened-to and first privately owned radio station in Zanzibar – Zenji (96.90 MHz) FM Station “The people’s station” to extend info-tainment through digital television broadcasting. The radio station which was started in May, 2005 in Zanzibar Township alone expanded its horizon to the whole of Zanzibar stretching to coastal regions of the Tanzania’s mainland. This expansion paved a way not only to increased number of listeners but also emergence of other media platform starting with a newspaper – Nipe Habari (more than 4,000 copies
distributed bi-weekly) and ultimately a digital television – Zenji Digital Television. The objective of Zenji Digital Television (ZDT) is to offer quality informative, educative and entertaining programs at competitive yet affordable rates. This is being achieved through a lineup of programs which cut across all age groups. Currently we have thirty two (32) channels and we are on final stages to increase fifty eight (58) more channels and reach 90 channels by end of 2017. We use mostly Swahili (sometimes with English subtitles) on our Free-to-Air channel as language for the content, with most foreign programs aired in English. Our programs lineup cuts across informative news (locally produced as well as internationally re-broadcasted), nature, features, legal content, panorama for women, for children and youth, music both local and international and sports news coverage, to name the least. These are broadcasted through our paid for as well as Free-to-Air channel to all locally produced content. These programs are spiced up by competent producers and broadcasters whose skills appeal to all ages. The vision for Zenji Digital Television is to be the most preferred digital television in Zanzibar. The mission is to produce and broadcast programs that appeal to all people of Zanzibar and beyond.
Zenji Digital Television currently has more than four (4) thousand subscribers with a growth rate of 34 per cent per annum. We broadcast digitally in Zanzibar (Unguja and Pemba Islands) with a vision of tapping onto other regions of the Tanzania’s mainland. We have hired highly competitive team both technical and administrative to ensure a smooth growth of the Digital Television. We put our viewers at the center of our business. We are aspiring to increase our number of programs from our customer surveys to respond to trendy and demand. These will ensure loyalty and sustainability. Our consistency in ensuring that our programs line up is not interrupted by unplanned drastic changes has not only increased our subscribers but has also attracted foreign media such as BBC, DW and VOA to directly partner with us. We hope to attract more partners both local and international to provide the content that the customers have continued to appreciate that it is now closer to them than before through our media channels. Driven by our vision, as the management of the Zanzibar Media Corporation Ltd, we are aspired to bring research for more appealing and attractive content to continue to soothe the demand of our customers.
